a prepaid Calling Card works There are four easy steps: 1.
Purchase a prepaid calling card
Cards are available in various currencies
but usually American Dollars (US$) or Pounds Sterling (GBP) and in various denominations
such as 10, 20, 50 or 100 dollars which represent the value of calls you can make
with it. 2. Dial the access number for the country you are in
Your calling card will be supplied with a list of toll-free (or free phone) access
telephone numbers for every country in which the phone card can be used. 3.
At the prompt, enter your PIN number as shown on your calling card
and
hear your remaining calling card balance. 4. At the prompt, dial your
destination phone number
which should include the full international dialling
code: Dial the
International Access Code for the country you
are dialling from (00 in Europe, 011 in the USA) followed by the
Country
Code for the number you are dialling (USA=1; UK=44)
followed by the
Destination Number but without any initial zero. For example:
Dialling New York (212) 566-XXXX from the UK, dial: 00 1 212 566 XXXX.
Dialling
London 020-7654 XXXX from the USA, dial: 011 44 20 7654 XXXX. Please note
that with some phone cards you do not need to dial the International Access Code.
In the examples above you would only need to dial 1 212 etc. or 44 20 etc. Check
the specific instructions that come with your card. When you finish a
call most phone cards will tell you how many remaining minutes you have and
invite you to make another call without hanging up by entering a code such as
###, or **. <TOP> How
prepaid Calling Cards save you money Pre-paid calling cards
sometime know as "phone cards" are purchased in denominations, such as $5, $10,
$20, or in other available denominations such as $50 or $100, and they may be
available in other currencies such as sterling (GBP). When you purchase
a calling card, it is pre-charged with a value of call credit which is usually
the same as that of the calling card value. (Sometimes cards may give extra value
such as a $25 for $20). Callers can then use the calling card to call from
almost any touch tone telephone to call either domestic (local) or International
numbers. Because calling cards are pre-paid, calling card producers are
able to purchase 'minutes' in bulk from line carriers such as MCI, WorldCom, Deutche
Telecom, BT, etc. Purchasing in bulk means savings, and these savings are passed
onto the calling card user. Typically, on international calls, callers can save
over 80% over a standard dialling service, and in some cases over 90%, thus making
calling cards a very attractive method for calling abroad. Calling cards
are then generally supplied to calling card resellers who in turn retail the cards. Normally
first line customer services are supplied by the card operator, details of which
are normally sent with the order. As the physical card is not needed, many orders
are now made via email or over the phone. The phone card resellers then send details
to the customer, the details would normally include :- - Access number/s
- PIN
number/s
- Customer Services telephone number for that specific card
- Usage
instructions

Some payphone providers charge for using pre-paid calling
cards either by an upfront surcharge or a price per minute surcharge. If you intend
using pay phones, please check this before purchasing your calling card. <TOP> Hotel

Some hotels charge for calling the toll free access number.

Charge
Some calling card operators impose a connection charge, which
is made regardless of the length of the call. This charge can vary depending upon
the country you are calling from and may become onerous if you intend making lots
of short calls. <TOP> Quality
considerations
One way that calling card and phone card operators
save money is by restricting bandwidth, which may result in poor voice quality.
It may be a good idea to try a particular calling card first by buying a low denomination.
Then consider purchasing a higher denomination or multiple calling cards once
you are satisfied with the quality. <TOP> Maintenance
charges
Some calling cards may have a daily maintenance charge. Make
sure you carefully check the product details before ordering. <TOP> Expiry
date
Most calling cards have a fixed life and will expire a certain
number of days after the date they are first used. A typical life is 90 days but
check before you purchase especially if your useage is likely to be infrequent. <TOP> Minute
billing
Calling card and phone card operators may bill calls by the
second, half-minute, full minute or even in two minute blocks. Be sure to check
the product details before ordering. <TOP> Mobile
charges
When calling mobile phones (cell phones), the rate charged
may be more than for a call to a landline in the same country. Be sure to check
the product details before ordering. <TOP> Free
calls
Some calling card and phone card operators state that a card
has £5 or $5 worth of extra calls. The supplier should make it clear whether or
not the rates shown include (i.e. have been adjusted for) these extra calls. <TOP> Local
access using 1-800 or 0800 toll free or free phone access
If the access
number is a toll free or free phone number then the line you are calling from
will not normally be charged with accessing this number. However, you may be charged
for a "free" call by your mobile phone billing company or by a hotel
or pay phone operator. It is as well to check before you make a call. When
the calling card operator provides an access number that is not a toll free number,
it will usually be charged at the same rate as a local call from the country you
are in. Be aware that this call will be charged to the bill for the phone you
are calling from. For example, in the UK, 0845 Local Rate numbers are charged
at 1p to 3p per minute. Hotels and mobile phone operators may charge more. <TOP> Global
Calling cards
Some calling cards can be used from several countries.
If you are using this type of calling card be sure to take a copy of the access
numbers with you before travelling. They are supplied with the calling card as
a printed list. <TOP> Using
